Slovenian Assistance to Ukraine
29 September 2016 15:54

Ljubljana, 28 September 2016 – Today, a donation contract for television transmitters was signed between RTV Slovenija and BRT Concern at the RTV Slovenija premises. In the presence of representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia and the Embassy of Ukraine in Ljubljana, the contract was signed by RTV Slovenija’s Acting Director General, Marko Fili, and the Director General of BRT, the Ukrainian national radio and television broadcaster, Volodymyir Ishchuk. The transmitters will be used in the reconstruction of parts of the Ukrainian television network damaged due to the conflict in the eastern part of the country to re-establish the broadcasting of Ukrainian radio and television programmes throughout the country.

By signing the contract and donating the transmitters, Slovenia responded to Ukraine's request for assistance in the form of used analogue equipment, which has become obsolete in Slovenia due to the switch to digital equipment.

Slovenia has fostered friendly ties and excellent cooperation with Ukraine, providing it with humanitarian assistance worth EUR 221,500 thus far. Since 2005, more than 620 Ukrainian children have been to Slovenia for medical and psycho-social rehabilitation. Health-care programmes were provided to 380 children suffering from the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear explosion, and another 240 children, victims of the Ukrainian conflict, were provided psycho-social care. One girl, a victim of the armed conflict, was also given medical rehabilitation treatment in 2015 and 2016. Also, in 2015, a joint action was organised with the Centre for Emergency Assistance Coordination whereby Slovenia provided medical rehabilitation for military personnel and in kind assistance. Ukraine has also been allocated funding for development scholarships with a view to providing education for Ukrainian citizens in Slovenia. Three scholarships for post-graduate courses have been awarded. In addition, between 2012 and 2014, Slovenia donated EUR 120,000 to the Chernobyl Shelter Fund (CSF).
