On 8 May 2026, Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Slovenia Petro Beshta, Chargé d’Affaires of the United Kingdom in Slovenia Nigel Baker
British Embassy Ljubljana, and the Mayor of Murska Sobota Damjan Anželj
Mestna občina Murska Sobota took part in a commemorative ceremony at the Victory Memorial in Murska Sobota to honour fallen soldiers.
On the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II, the Embassy of Ukraine in Slovenia initiated a memorial event dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives during the liberation of European lands from Nazi occupation.
The Victory Memorial in Murska Sobota commemorates the soldiers who fell during the liberation of the Prekmurje region, including Ukrainians. Ukrainian servicemen, serving within the units of the 3rd Ukrainian Front, participated in the liberation of former Yugoslavia from fascist occupiers, fighting side by side with Slovenian partisans.
Today, together with all of Europe, Ukraine honours the memory of millions of victims of World War II and all those who fought against Nazism. No country has the right to claim exclusive ownership of the victory over Nazism, as it was achieved through the joint efforts of dozens of nations and peoples.
The Day of Remembrance and Victory reminds us of the price of peace, the importance of unity, and our shared responsibility for a future without war.
