On 4 March 2026, an important panel discussion titled “Rewriting European Security: Ukraine, NATO and the EU in a Changing World” took place at the Faculty of Social Sciences (FDV – Fakulteta za družbene vede), University of Ljubljana.
The discussion featured:
Petro Beshta — Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the Republic of Slovenia
Helene Stergiou — National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister of the Netherlands
Dr. Faris Kočan — Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana
The speakers discussed how Russia’s war against Ukraine has fundamentally transformed the European security system. They spoke about a new reality in which Europe can no longer live under illusions and must take greater responsibility for its own defense, invest more in security, develop its defense industry, and strengthen transatlantic cooperation.
Ambassador of Ukraine Petro Beshta emphasized the principle of “peace through strength.” Today, Ukraine is effectively defending not only itself but also the security of the whole of Europe.
It is important that such discussions take place within the university environment. Ukrainian students who are temporarily staying in Slovenia due to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine are also studying at the faculty. Delivering important messages to students is especially crucial today, as students represent the future of every country — future leaders, diplomats, and policymakers whose decisions will shape the security and stability of Europe.
